In versions 6.20.0 and below, a user with the ability to launch a container with a custom YAML configuration (e.g a member of the 'incus' group) can create an environment variable containing newlines, which can be used to add additional configuration items in the container's lxc.conf due to newline injection. This can allow adding arbitrary lifecycle hooks, ultimately resulting in arbitrary command execution on the host. Exploiting this issue on IncusOS requires a slight modification of the payload to change to a different writable directory for the validation step (e.g /tmp). This can be confirmed with a second container with /tmp mounted from the host (A privileged action for validation only). A fix is planned for versions 6.0.6\nand 6.21.0, but they have not been released at the time of publication.","title":"Description of the CVE"},{"category":"legal_disclaimer","text":"CSAF 2.0 data is provided by SUSE under the Creative Commons License 4.0 with Attribution (CC-BY-4.0).","title":"Terms of use"}],"publisher":{"category":"vendor","contact_details":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/contact/","name":"SUSE Product Security Team","namespace":"https://www.suse.com/"},"references":[{"category":"external","summary":"CVE-2026-23953","url":"https://www.suse.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-23953"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Security Ratings","url":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/rating/"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Bug 1257141 for CVE-2026-23953","url":"https://bugzilla.suse.com/1257141"},{"category":"external","summary":"Advisory link for SUSE-SU-2026:0403-1","url":"https://lists.suse.com/pipermail/sle-security-updates/2026-February/024084.html"}],"title":"SUSE CVE CVE-2026-23953","tracking":{"current_release_date":"2026-03-05T13:55:49Z","generator":{"date":"2026-01-24T00:24:26Z","engine":{"name":"cve-database.git:bin/generate-csaf-vex.pl","version":"1"}},"id":"CVE-2026-23953","initial_release_date":"2026-01-24T00:24:26Z","revision_history":[{"date":"2026-01-24T00:24:26Z","number":"2","summary":"references added, severity changed from to important"},{"date":"2026-02-10T00:24:43Z","number":"3","summary":"references added"},{"date":"2026-03-05T13:55:49Z","number":"4","summary":"vulnerabilities added"}],"status":"interim","version":"4"}},"product_tree":{"branches":[{"branches":[{"branches":[{"category":"product_name","name":"openSUSE Tumbleweed","product":{"name":"openSUSE Tumbleweed","product_id":"openSUSE Tumbleweed","product_identification_helper":{"cpe":"cpe:/o:opensuse:tumbleweed"}}},{"category":"product_version","name":"incus-6.22-1.1","product":{"name":"incus-6.22-1.1","product_id":"incus-6.22-1.1","product_identification_helper":{"purl":"pkg:rpm/suse/incus@6.22-1.1"}}},{"category":"product_version","name":"incus-bash-completion-6.22-1.1","product":{"name":"incus-bash-completion-6.22-1.1","product_id":"incus-bash-completion-6.22-1.1","product_identification_helper":{"purl":"pkg:rpm/suse/incus-bash-completion@6.22-1.1"}}},{"category":"product_version","name":"incus-fish-completion-6.22-1.1","product":{"name":"incus-fish-completion-6.22-1.1","product_id":"incus-fish-completion-6.22-1.1","product_identification_helper":{"purl":"pkg:rpm/suse/incus-fish-completion@6.22-1.1"}}},{"category":"product_version","name":"incus-tools-6.22-1.1","product":{"name":"incus-tools-6.22-1.1","product_id":"incus-tools-6.22-1.1","product_identification_helper":{"purl":"pkg:rpm/suse/incus-tools@6.22-1.1"}}},{"category":"product_version","name":"incus-zsh-completion-6.22-1.1","product":{"name":"incus-zsh-completion-6.22-1.1","product_id":"incus-zsh-completion-6.22-1.1","product_identification_helper":{"purl":"pkg:rpm/suse/incus-zsh-completion@6.22-1.1"}}}],"category":"product_family","name":"SUSE Linux Enterprise"}],"category":"vendor","name":"SUSE"}],"relationships":[{"category":"default_component_of","full_product_name":{"name":"incus-6.22-1.1 as component of openSUSE Tumbleweed","product_id":"openSUSE Tumbleweed:incus-6.22-1.1"},"product_reference":"incus-6.22-1.1","relates_to_product_reference":"openSUSE Tumbleweed"},{"category":"default_component_of","full_product_name":{"name":"incus-bash-completion-6.22-1.1 as component of openSUSE Tumbleweed","product_id":"openSUSE Tumbleweed:incus-bash-completion-6.22-1.1"},"product_reference":"incus-bash-completion-6.22-1.1","relates_to_product_reference":"openSUSE Tumbleweed"},{"category":"default_component_of","full_product_name":{"name":"incus-fish-completion-6.22-1.1 as component of openSUSE Tumbleweed","product_id":"openSUSE Tumbleweed:incus-fish-completion-6.22-1.1"},"product_reference":"incus-fish-completion-6.22-1.1","relates_to_product_reference":"openSUSE Tumbleweed"},{"category":"default_component_of","full_product_name":{"name":"incus-tools-6.22-1.1 as component of openSUSE Tumbleweed","product_id":"openSUSE Tumbleweed:incus-tools-6.22-1.1"},"product_reference":"incus-tools-6.22-1.1","relates_to_product_reference":"openSUSE Tumbleweed"},{"category":"default_component_of","full_product_name":{"name":"incus-zsh-completion-6.22-1.1 as component of openSUSE Tumbleweed","product_id":"openSUSE Tumbleweed:incus-zsh-completion-6.22-1.1"},"product_reference":"incus-zsh-completion-6.22-1.1","relates_to_product_reference":"openSUSE Tumbleweed"}]},"vulnerabilities":[{"cve":"CVE-2026-23953","ids":[{"system_name":"SUSE CVE Page","text":"https://www.suse.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-23953"}],"notes":[{"category":"general","text":"Incus is a system container and virtual machine manager.
