Apart from the ethernet solution, my only success with Win98 and muLinux
had been using phone cable and two modem.
I used a laptot with win98 and internal-modem and a desktop with muLinux
and external modem on /dev/ttyS1.
I simply inserted the phone cable coming from the laptop in the
desktop's modem.
After that, in muLinux I did:
# setup -f dialin
The problem: on this kind of phone-network we have no central-tone,
so, when setup/dialin ask you the question, you have to answer "n" to
"may I expect a RING on the line?".
After that, mulinux enter is a sort of "modem-polling-mode": it send
to the modem the command ATA, periodically, and (if you are looky), the
connection begin. (rustic script: mugetty).
On the Windows side is used the DialupUtility, that usually I used
in order to do PPP with the provider.
Be sure: after a couple of attempts, your Win98 will connect to muLinux
and you can browse the muLinux Samba in your Windows, or do ftp, telnet,
etc.
I do not know cheaper connection of that.
