Need help with X windows...fvwm95

I have everything setup on my laptop...
When i startx there is a 1.5 - 2 inch black strip on the right of the
display..
I don't have any monitor controls so I can't just make the screen bigger..
Also for some reason i can't do 800x600 in X (works fine in Win98)
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
