Please, Clive: be more collaborative. In recent muLinux I only added
a precompiled, statically-linked, "fdformat" binary, because many recent
Linux distros comes without it.
Are you able to fdformat the floppy using the "old" fdformat, from 11r8,
answering "n" to the format stage in the 11r12?
Maybe, the new static fdformat does the bad job?
In summing up, can you test these two rows:
# fdformat /dev/fd0H1772
# cat BOOT ROOT.gz USR.bz2 > /dev/fd0H1722
using two different "fdformat"? Or the "superformat" package?
